What are we learning

Year 6 Kidblog

Play times table rock stars!

Hello from the Year 6 team.

Our Focus

This is a really busy time of year for us.  We are sure the children will have spoken to you about how hard they are working and how successful they are being.  Obviously our big focus is on English and maths as we are trying to get the children as ready as possible for their exams – and for their secondary school curriculum’s.

We would also like to take this moment to say how impressed we have been with the amount of reading happening across Year 6. It’s every teacher’s dream to walk into a room and hear children recommending books to one another and talking avidly about their current book!

Weekly Dates for your information

Monday/Tuesday – reading records checked

Wednesday – PE

Thursday – grammar homework in

Spelling activities are handed out on a Thursday and due in Thursday the following week where we will mark them in class.

Reading records are checked on a Monday where there should be evidence of at least three reads from the week before. Reading regularly and enjoying what you are reading is hugely important – if you ever need a book recommendation, please come and find us!

Times tables should be practised at home – this is especially important for the run up to SATs! Practise sheets are available on the school website.

Can we politely remind all parents that children should be in full school uniform, including black school shoes (plain black trainers are also acceptable), as it helps to create a purposeful and united atmosphere around school and ensures the children are in the correct mindset for excellent learning.

PE is on a Wednesday afternoon. Thank you to all of the children who have already come in with a full PE kit. As the days get cooler, please feel free to bring in a tracksuit in order to keep warm.

Swimming will start in the summer term, we’ll write to you with more information closer to the time.

As you will no doubt be aware, Year 6 is a big year for the children in terms of taking their SATs. We have been so impressed at how quickly the children have settled in already and how positively they have responded to the increased challenge. This year SATs week commences on the week beginning 13th May 2019. These tests are an important part of your child’s primary school career and new secondary school transfer. As a result of this, we ask that no holidays are taken during term time and that absences are kept to a minimum. If you or your child have any worries, concerns or questions regarding the exams, please feel free to talk to any member of the Year 6 staff.

SATs Dates

Please be aware that these dates are set by the Government and that we cannot move them. It is vital that children are present for each exam as they will not be allowed to take them at any other time.
