Hello from the Year 6 team!
We hope this newsletter finds you well. We’ve already had a highly successful couple of weeks and can’t wait to see what the rest of the term brings! Below you will find information regarding Year 6 and on the reverse you will find the topics we will be covering in the autumn term.
Spelling activities are handed out on a Monday and due in Friday that week.
Reading records are checked on a Monday where there should be evidence of at least three reads from the week before.
Times tables should be practised at home – this is especially important for the run up to SATs!
PE is on a Thursday afternoon. Thank you to all of the children who have already come in with a full PE kit. As the days get cooler, please feel free to bring in a tracksuit in order to keep warm.
Swimming will start in the summer term, we’ll write to you with more information closer to the time.
As you will no doubt be aware, Year 6 is a big year for the children in terms of taking their SATs. We have been so impressed at how quickly the children have settled in already and how positively they have responded to the increased challenge. This year SATs week commences on the week beginning 14th May 2018. These tests are an important part of your child’s primary school career and new secondary school transfer. As a result of this, we ask that no holidays are taken during term time and that absences are kept to a minimum. If you or your child have any worries, concerns or questions regarding the exams, please feel free to talk to any member of the Year 6 staff.
Ms Babiy’s English group are starting this term looking at the gory Shakespearian play, Macbeth.
Miss Mathieson’s group will be focusing their writing around the novel: The Palace of Laughter.
Both classes are working hard on their calculation strategies, ensuring they have a solid understanding of place value and number.
After that, we will move on to calculating fractions.
Our guided reading sessions this term will be focused around answering comprehension questions and SATs readiness.
The children have started daily SPaG lessons focusing on the Y6 spelling, punctuation and grammar tests. These lessons are particularly important as they feed into all aspects of our English lessons.
Our Topic this term is ‘Mystery of the Maya’, within this topic we will be being archaeologists and trying to discover why the Maya Civilisation vanished so suddenly!
As part of this, we will be drawing on our skills of working with sources and comparing different time periods.
We will also be drawing comparisons between the UK and South America in terms of their geographical make-up.
Alongside the Maya, we will be also be teaching two mini topics this term. One celebrating Black History Month and the other commemorating World War II.
Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support, Miss Mathieson and Ms Babiy (Year 6 class teachers)
